Where to Stay in Zurich Switzerland- Guide for First time Visitors

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and one of the most popular travel destinations in the country. Choosing accommodation in Zurich is not easy if you don’t know the structure and sights of the city. But I can help you find out with this detailed guide to the best places to stay in Zurich.
From the lively and historic Old Town to the residential and quiet Enge, Zurich has the perfect neighborhood for everyone. You’ll find the right hotel whether you want to stay in the middle of the action or a little further away but still close to important attractions.

Where to Stay in Zurich

One of the great things about Zurich is that the city has an excellent public transport network that is very easy to navigate. Even if you choose to stay in a non-central area, you won’t be more than 15 minutes from Bahnhofstrasse.

The areas mentioned here are suitable for everyone, whether it’s your first or tenth time in the city. So let’s take a look together at the best places to stay in Zurich!

Why You Should Listen To Me

Why should you trust me with these tips? Because I know Zurich like the back of my hand and know its sights very well. And because I research a lot of hotels before preparing for a trip and I like to share what I find out. Combine that with Dave and Deb’s knowledge after a few visits and you can be confident we know this town.

In this guide, I have listed only the most popular hotels that will enrich your experience in the Swiss city. No matter which hotel you choose, you’ll enjoy first-class service, clean rooms and easy access to Zurich’s best attractions.

Where to Stay in Zurich For Fun

Best Zurich Hotels

It is a big city with many neighborhoods and countless hotels; However, Zurich city center is within walking distance and most of the city’s best attractions are nearby. That’s why the central part of the city is the best option for first-time visitors who want to be right in the middle of the action. However, it can get pretty crowded, especially in high season, so I’ve also listed less central and less crowded options.

Regardless of whether you book a hotel on Bahnhofstrasse or near the airport: you will never be more than 20 minutes from the center of Zurich by train or tram. In addition, the location does not play a major role in terms of price; Everything is expensive in Zurich and hotels have never been an exception.

Don’t worry if you don’t want to read everything I have to say about the best hotels in Zurich. Here’s a quick summary of the best places to stay in the Swiss city:

Where We Stayed

Where to stay in Zurich Our Hotel

We stayed at the Hotel Florhof in the historic center of Zurich and loved it. Everything was close by and we hardly had to use trams and buses. Unfortunately the hotel is currently closed for renovations, but I can recommend our second best option in a similar price range: the Hotel Alexander Zurich Old Town.

It is even closer to Zurich’s main attractions, but has a different interior style. It is located just 5 minutes from the train station and 10 minutes from the Grossmünster and offers beautiful views of the Zurich city landscape from the rooms.

District 1 (Altsdadt & City): Our Recommendation

Where To Stay in Zurich District 1 Altsdadt & City

District 1 is the central area of the city and stretches from Zurich Central Station in the north to Lake Zurich in the south. It is the heart of the city with most of Zurich’s best monuments and attractions, making it the perfect destination for first-time visitors to the city.

One advantage of this central location is that all of Zurich’s major attractions are within walking distance of your hotel. And from most hotel rooms you have a wonderful view over the roofs of Zurich and Lake Zurich.

However, one downside to District 1 is that even the cheapest hotels are expensive, but the same goes for pretty much everything in Zurich.

Historic Churches

Historic churches, the famous Bahnhofstrasse and some of the city’s best museums are located in this district. And this also applies to the best restaurants and cafes. Whether you want to spend your days strolling the city streets or shopping endlessly, this is an excellent part of the city.

Where to stay in Zurich District 1 near churches

Pros and Cons of District 1

  • Walking distance to all historic landmarks in Zurich
  • A wide variety of accommodation options
  • Lots of cafes, restaurants, and bars

  • Expensive accommodation
  • Restaurants and cafes are pricey
  • Busy and crowded most of the time

Highlights of Staying in District 1

Highlights of staying in District 1 Bahnhofstrasse

District 1 of Zurich includes the Lindenhof, the old town and the city districts. All of Zurich’s important historical monuments are located here, so a stay in this part of the city offers many highlights.

  • Grossmünster and Fraumünster: Grossmünster and Fraumünster are the two most famous churches in the center of Zurich. The first is on the right bank of the Limmat and can be recognized by its two clock towers. And the latter is located on the left bank of the river and attracts attention with the green roof of its tower.
  • Zurich Opera House: The Zurich Opera House is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. The building is known for its neo-baroque architectural style and the interior of the building boasts beautiful paintings and lavish decorations.
  • Bahnhofstrasse: Bahnhofstrasse is the iconic shopping street that stretches through the historic center of Zurich, from the train station to Lake Zurich. It’s lined with shops on both sides and is the perfect spot for window shopping and sightseeing in Zurich.
  • Swiss National Museum: Located at the northern end of District 1, the Swiss National Museum is the city’s best destination for anyone interested in learning more about Swiss history and traditions. If you can only visit one museum in Zurich, make it this one.
  • Old Botanical Garden: Having fun in Zurich doesn’t necessarily mean spending a fortune. The old botanical garden in Zurich’s old town is an attraction that everyone can visit for free. With an octagonal palm greenhouse and an impressive collection of medicinal plants, it is one of the city’s best attractions and accessible to everyone.

Best Places to Stay in District 1

From hostels to the best hotels in Zurich, Kreis 1 is a neighborhood where everyone can find suitable accommodation. Keep in mind that even the cheapest hotels in Zurich are expensive and this city is not really suitable for travelers on a budget.

Zurich’s Old Town, the City and the Lindenhof are the three headquarters of District 1. Each of them is a good starting point, just a few minutes’ walk from Zurich’s most famous sights and the best swimming spots on Lake Zurich and the Limmat. .

Green Marmot Capsule Hotel Zürich

Green Marmot Capsule Hotel Zurich – For budget-conscious travelers, there is hardly a better option in Zurich than the Green Marmot Capsule Hotel. The only cheaper option is a traditional hostel, and even there the price is the same, but you stay in a bunk bed in a dormitory rather than a more private room.

Budget Friendly

The Green Marmot Capsule Hotel is a budget hotel in the heart of Zurich, just a few minutes from the Grossmünster. It is modeled after the capsule hotels of Japan and each guest has their own private space, no matter how small.

You won’t be able to stand upright in your capsule, but that shouldn’t matter. It has a bed, a small bedside table and a socket to charge your phone. If booking a locker capsule is important to you, you need to book a locker capsule. The hotel is set up similar to a hostel with female and mixed dorms, but the pods feel much more private than the bunk beds.

The capsule hotel’s common areas include a mini kitchen in the lobby, bathrooms and balconies. For 52 CHF per night, there is no better deal for a solo traveler in Zurich. See reviews and availability.

Hotel Alexander Zurich Old Town

The Hotel Alexander is located in the historic center of Zurich, on the right bank of the Limmat. It is located just five minutes from the church and St. Peter’s Square in the heart of Zurich and just six minutes from Zurich HB train station.

The hotel rooms are elegant and modern and equipped with single or double beds. It’s worth noting that rooms with two single beds are cheaper, starting from just 220 CHF per night in the low season. For a hotel in such a central location in Zurich, this is a really good deal, especially since breakfast is included in the price.

Each room has a private bathroom with a shower or bathtub and a designated work area. It’s my favorite option for a trip to Zurich in December because it’s right next to the Christmas market stalls. See prices and availability.

Widder Hotel

Widder Hotel – There is no shortage of luxury hotels in Zurich, but few are as extraordinary as the Widder Hotel. With a central location, very spacious rooms and opulent amenities, this is by far one of the best hotels in the heart of Zurich.

Located directly below the Lindenhof and just a stone’s throw from Bahnhofstrasse, this fabulous hotel is the best choice for travelers looking to pamper themselves in Zurich. All rooms feature designer furniture, quirky details and a walk-in shower or bathtub. A private bathroom with luxury toiletries is a given.

With a starting price of CHF 800 per night, this is undoubtedly one of the most exclusive hotels in Zurich. The Executive Suite is by far the best room in the hotel and has a private roof terrace that offers the best views over the rooftops of Zurich. Check prices and availability here.

Zurich West / Industriequartier – Best For Nightlife

Best Area To Stay in Zurich For Nightlife Zurich West Industriequartier

Zurich West, also known as the industrial district, is the city’s former industrial area. The area has changed over the years and is now a hip and trendy place that attracts young professionals. Its name is also starting to change, as more and more people call it Zurich-West instead of Industriequartier or Kreis 5.

This part of Zurich is ideal for young adults, especially those who want to experience Zurich’s nightlife. In addition to bars and clubs, there are also many second-hand shops and art galleries in this part of the city.

Zurich West is just 15 minutes by tram from Zurich’s Old Town, which has several stops throughout the district. With excellent public transport links, plenty of trendy cafes and several budget hotels, it’s easy to see why this area attracts a younger crowd.

Zurich West or Industriequartier is not home to many historical sights. But it is home to some of Zurich’s newest landmarks, including a market under a viaduct and a tower made of shipping containers. The attractions here are trendy and fun, just like the crowds they draw.

  • Design Museum Zurich: Zurich has two design museums and both are located in the industrial quarter. With an exhibition that shows the development of design over the centuries using everyday objects and works of art, the museum is a must for all design lovers in Zurich.
  • Freitag Tower: Freitag is a store that sells bags and accessories. Located at the base of a tower made entirely of containers, it pays homage to the ancient splendor of the district. Even if you don’t plan on buying a bag, it’s worth a stop at the tower as it has become a landmark of Zurich-West.
  • Market Hall: Shopping in the market hall in the Industriequartier is a unique experience in this city and a must if you want to bring home some delicious Swiss cheese. Local farmers and food vendors have set up shop in the market, which is located under the Zurich Viaduct. The islands are arranged around the viaduct, with the shelves resting on the stone bridge.
  • Oberer Letten outdoor pool: With a diving tower, sun terraces and swimming opportunities, this outdoor pool is the meeting point on a hot summer day in Zurich. Play beach volleyball and swim in the Limmat to find out how locals relax after work in Zurich.

Best Places to Stay in Industriequartier

Hotels in the industrial district are significantly cheaper than those in the center of Zurich. Five-star hotels are also available for 150 francs per person, a surprisingly good offer for Zurich. Especially when you consider that the entire area is connected to the center by trams and trains and you are never more than 15 minutes from the heart of the city.

This area is particularly popular with couples and solo travelers. It’s one of the best neighborhoods in Zurich for travelers on a budget, both for cheaper hotels and more convenient shopping options.

ibis Zürich City West

The Ibis Zurich City West is a nice, affordable hotel in the center of the industrial district. Don’t confuse it with the Ibis Budget – although they are in the same building, they are two separate hotels. The price difference is minimal, but the service and amenities are much better than the standard Ibis hotel.

For around CHF 130 per night, you get a room with two single beds, a desk, a private bathroom and a TV. A really good deal considering that a hostel in the center of Zurich only costs 10 francs more per person. All guests also have access to free WiFi.

The location of the hotel is great. It is right in front of the Technopark tram station, which takes you to Zurich HB in just 10 minutes. Bahnhofstrasse can be reached by public transport in 10 to 15 minutes, meaning all of Zurich’s major sights can be easily reached from the Ibis Zurich City West Hotel. Find out about prices and availability here.

Züri by Fassbind

Zuri by Fassbind is a four-star hotel with elegant and modern rooms. For around CHF 160 per night (for two travelers) you get a decent room with a double bed, private bathroom, seating area and desk. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, but the views aren’t great.

What’s special about this hotel is that all guests have free access to the sauna and fitness facilities. There is also a business corner with a printer, ideal for travelers who need to work during their stay in Zurich.

The location of the Zuri by Fassbind Hotel is excellent. It is located right next to the Escher-Wyss-Platz transit station and is connected to Zurich city center by bus and tram. It is only 15 minutes from Bahnhofstrasse and 20 minutes from the airport. Prices and reviews can be found here.

Renaissance Zurich Tower Hotel

The Renaissance Zurich Tower Hotel is located in the center of Zurich West, just a few minutes’ walk from the district’s tram line. The hotel is located in the Mobimo Tower and the rooms on the upper floor offer wonderful views of the Zurich skyline and the mountains in the background. Zurich Hardbrücke train station is only 5 minutes away from the hotel.

All rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, a private bathroom, a flat-screen TV with Chromecast, and a coffee maker. The five-star hotel is a great option for couples, families and business travelers. There is a gym on the 15th floor where guests can work out while enjoying the expansive views of Zurich.

Rooms at the Renaissance Zurich Tower Hotel start at CHF 235 for a basic room on the lower floor, excluding breakfast. Rooms on the upper floors with breakfast in the hotel restaurant cost CHF 305 per night, which is a good deal for a five-star boutique hotel in Zurich. Check prices and availability here.

Enge: Best For Families And Proximity To Parks

Best Places to stay in Enge Area in Zurich

With large public parks, enchanting views of Lake Zurich, and easy access to Uetliberg, Enge is the best part of Zurich for travelers more interested in the city’s natural monuments. Additionally, Enge is a more residential area of Zurich and therefore a good location if you want to escape the crowds and noise of the city center.

That’s not to say there aren’t any must-see sights or attractions in Enge. This part of Zurich is home to some of the city’s best museums, including the Rietbergmuseum and the Fifa World Football Museum.

Excellent hotels and easy access to the city center make Enge a great base for your first trip to Zurich. You’ll spend less on accommodation, have access to great restaurants where locals eat, and be just a five-minute train ride from Zurich’s historic center.

Where to stay in Zurich Enge Neighborhood near Parks

Pros and Cons of Staying in Enge

  • Great for staying in private apartments
  • A more quiet part of Zurich
  • Easy access to parks and green spaces

  • Not centrally located
  • Fewer bars and clubs
  • Not as many historic attractions

Highlights of Staying in Enge

Highlights of staying in Enge, Zurich Uetliberg

Enge is home to several very famous museums, but these are not the main reason for staying in the city. Instead, choose to stay in this neighborhood for its extensive public parks and easy access to Lake Zurich with numerous designated beach areas and marinas.

  • Fifa World Football Museum: A museum containing over 1,000 football artifacts, it is a must-see for anyone who loves the sport. The museum’s collection includes everything from players’ jerseys to a preserved football from the 15th century. The FIFA World Football Museum is located right next to Enge train station and is easy to reach from other parts of Zurich.
  • Lake Zurich: Every part of Zurich offers easy access to Lake Zurich, but Enge borders it entirely to the east. With beaches, lakeside parks, designated swimming areas and marinas, Enge is the perfect neighborhood for travelers who love being close to the water and want to wake up to a fantastic view of Lake Zurich.
  • Rietbergmuseum: The Rietbergmuseum, located in the extensive Rieterpark, is known for its excellent collection of non-European works of art. It is the only museum of its kind in Switzerland and a must-see if you want to see spectacular works of art from Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
  • Uetliberg: Enge borders the lower slopes of the Uetliberg and offers easy access to Zurich’s local mountain. Travelers interested in hiking trails and mountain railway rides will appreciate that this Zurich neighborhood offers such easy access to the local peak.

Best Places To Stay In Enge

Enge is an exclusive area of Zurich and therefore full of exclusive hotels that offer first-class service and comfort. You won’t find many cheap hotels or hostels in this area, but you will find plenty of private apartments.

This is a more residential area of the city, making it a great place to stay for travelers who prefer having an entire apartment to themselves rather than just a hotel room. And thanks to the excellent public transport connections, you are always 15 minutes away from the heart of Zurich.

Residence Mutschellen

The Residence Mutschellen is a perfect apartment hotel for families and couples in Zurich. It’s close to a large park that’s great for cycling and hiking, making this budget hotel an excellent choice for travelers who want to indulge in outdoor activities.

Apartment options at the hotel range from small studios to family suites. Even the smallest studios have a kitchenette, and that’s one of the main reasons why this apartment hotel is great for budget travelers in Zurich. Eating out in restaurants is expensive in the Swiss city and being able to prepare your own meals can save you a lot of money.

The cheapest apartments start at CHF 175 per night, a good deal for two adults. It’s not much more expensive than budget hotels in the center of Zurich and you can’t even begin to compare the amenities available in Residence Mutschellen apartments. Each apartment at this hotel has a bathroom, kitchenette and high-speed internet connection.

Engimatt City & Garden Hotel

The Enigmatt City & Garden Hotel is a modern and trendy four-star hotel in the western part of Enge. It is close to Rieterpark and just two minutes from the tram stop, which takes you to Bahnhofstrasse in about 10 minutes. The location is ideal for travelers who want to stay in a quieter area of Zurich but still have easy access to the city’s attractions.

What I like about this hotel is that all rooms have a balcony, mostly overlooking the hotel garden. And most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of light and let you enjoy beautiful views from the comfort of your hotel bed.

And it’s a very comfortable bed! All rooms also include a private bathroom, ironing facilities, a desk and a coffee maker. For 260 CHF per night, this is one of the best mid-range hotels in Zurich.

Park Hyatt Zurich

The Park Hyatt Zurich is located in the northern area of Enge, on the border with Zurich city center. The luxury hotel offers easy access to all of the city’s most famous attractions while being far enough away from the crowds and noise of the city center.

The hotel rooms are spacious and even the cheapest rooms have extra-large double beds. All rooms have a private bathroom with marble surfaces, a rainfall shower and a marble bathtub. And they are all flawless.

Room rates at this fabulous hotel start at around CHF 600 per night. However, this is the non-refundable rate excluding breakfast. With breakfast and the possibility of free cancellation, prices rise to CHF 760 per night, close to the prices of hotels in the center of Zurich. Prices and availability can be found here.

People also ask these questions about where to stay in Zurich

The best area to stay in Zurich is District 1 in the city center. It includes Lindenhof, the Old Town, and the City neighborhoods, for easy access to all the best attractions and landmarks in the city.

What Is The Most Scenic Part of Zurich?

The most scenic part of Zurich is Uetliberg Mountain, including the train ride up to the summit. The Uetliberg Lookout Tower offers sweeping views of Lake Zurich and the city’s skyline.

The most popular street in Zurich is Bahnhofstrasse. The central city street stretches from the city’s main train station, through the heart of the old town, and down to Lake Zurich.

Is Zurich Walkable?

Yes, Zurich is a highly walkable city. Many of its best attractions and landmarks are easy walking distance from one another, and the central part of the city is mostly flat, except for Lindenhof.

Where Not To Stay In Zurich

There is no bad place to stay in Zurich, at least in terms of security and access to attractions. You may want to avoid hotels along Long Street if you don’t like crowds and noise, as this is one of the best areas of the city for parties and nightlife. But if you’re planning on going out in Zurich, Langstrasse might be just the thing for you.

I also wouldn’t recommend staying near Zurich Airport. Hotels are not much cheaper than those in the center and the daily commute to the center of Zurich is a bit of a hassle. If you go shopping and want to leave your luggage at the hotel or just stop in your room to quickly freshen up between sightseeing, you will have to get on the train and waste at least 40 minutes on the way.

Geography of Zurich

The Geography in Zurich

The central area of Zurich is divided by the Limmat River and the historic center extends on both banks of the river. The city center is large and mostly flat, at least by Swiss standards. Most tourist attractions are located in the central area, within walking distance of each other. But there are also some other places worth seeing outside the historic center, all of which can be reached by public transport.

I can’t talk about the geography of Zurich without mentioning Lake Zurich and the Uetliberg, the city’s eponymous lake and local mountain. Both are beautiful natural attractions not to be missed when visiting Zurich and will provide you with additional opportunities to enjoy your time in this wonderful city.

Great Zurich Views from Uetliberg

Another reason that makes Zurich a great travel destination for everyone is the easy access to natural monuments and outdoor adventures. Hiking trails lead from the city center to the summit of the local mountain and there is an extensive mountain bike park just 15 minutes from Bahnhofstrasse.

You can take a boat ride on the lake in the morning, have lunch at a rooftop restaurant in the heart of the city’s financial district, and bike down the mountain in the afternoon. The city truly offers something for every visitor, whether they are looking for a big city atmosphere or outdoor adventure.
