New Wildlife Conservation Efforts

Vultures Breeding Program, Shamwari Reserve, South Africa

During the 10-day Natural Wonders Safari in South Africa, clients discover the wildlife kingdom of the Shamwari Private Game Reserve with seven lodges and three rehabilitation and educational facilities. In addition to being known as a safari destination, the reserve is also known for successful conservation initiatives.

Vultures play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem. However, they face numerous human-caused threats: some populations have declined sharply in the last 30 years (by more than 90%), and several species are threatened with extinction.

In collaboration with Vulpro, an organization whose mission is to protect African vultures through collaboration and innovation in South Africa, the vulture breeding program opened at the Shamwari Center on January 23, 2024 as part of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. As part of Africa’s largest vulture translocation, 160 Cape and African white-backed vultures have settled in their new home in Shamwari. Guests can visit the center during their stay.

Cheetah Conservation, Namibia

During the 10-day luxury train tour of Namibia, clients board the luxurious Rovos Rail and enjoy breathtaking views as they stop in the Kimberley and Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon after the Grand Canyon.

You will undertake safari experiences in Sossusvlei in Namibia and meet the incredible wildlife of Etosha National Park and one of the most accessible game reserves in Southern Africa. Guests can view giraffes, lions, elephants, leopards, leopards and black rhinos in their natural environment with numerous waterholes. You will also visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) Research and Education Center.

CCF is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to save the cheetah and its ecosystem. Over the last century, the cheetah population worldwide has declined by 90%. The center is located near the town of Ojiwarongo, overlooking the picturesque Waterberg Plateau.
