Believe me, reading and writing hotel reviews are two of my many hobbies. Copenhagen city center is compact and well connected to the suburbs via metro, trains and buses. There’s certainly not a bad area to stay in Copenhagen, especially when you’re conveniently a 15-minute subway ride from the historic center.

However, some hotels are better than others and I have done my due diligence to find only the best hotels in this Danish city. Our guide covers everything from affordable hostels to the best luxury hotels in Copenhagen.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at 25Hours Hotel Copenhagen in Indre By and had a great time. We chose the hotel mainly because of its location near Rosenborg Castle and because we planned to spend a whole day wandering around the castle gardens.

The service was excellent, the rooms were clean and I particularly liked the many decorative items. There is so much life in the room and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is tired of boring rooms where everything is white, beige or light grey.

Indre By: Our Recommendation For First-Time Visitors

Where to stay in Copenhagen Idre By City Centre

Indre By is the city center of Copenhagen with the best monuments and attractions. For first-time visitors who want to be within walking distance of Copenhagen’s best attractions, there’s no better part of town.

It is the heart of the Danish capital with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings and all the famous monuments. Some of the best hotels in Copenhagen are located in Indre By, so travelers are spoiled for choice regardless of their preferred hotel type and price range.

Indre By Neighbourhood Copenhagen

Pros and Cons of Staying in Indre By

Pros:

  • Walking distance to tourist attractions
  • Many hotels to choose from
  • Excellent public transport connections
  • Historic part of the city

Cons:

  • The busiest area of Copenhagen
  • Hotels and restaurants are expensive

Highlights of Staying in Indre By

If it seems that all of Copenhagen’s monuments and attractions are in Indre By, that’s because they are there. The city’s historic core is known for castles, large public squares, historic buildings and much more.

  • Tivoli Gardens: The amusement park is one of Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks. With seasonal decorations and themes, there is always something new to discover in the park. And with more than 30 rides, Tivoli Gardens guarantees a full day of exploration.
  • Rosenborg Castle: Located in the heart of Indre By, Rosenborg Castle is one of Copenhagen’s most famous landmarks. A moat, sumptuous furniture, opulent decorations and the Danish Crown Jewels are the main reasons to prioritize visiting the Dutch Renaissance castle.
  • Copenhagen Opera House: The Copenhagen Opera House building is famous for its modern architecture. It is located on the island of Holmen in the city center and can be seen from much of central Copenhagen. If you could see a live show on site it would be a unique experience.
  • Copenhagen City Hall (Square): Copenhagen City Hall is a landmark of the city and is known for its ornate facade. The building was built in 1905 and is famous for the World Clock by Jens Olsen. The town square in front of the town hall is the largest in Copenhagen with a capacity of 50,000 people.

Best Places to Stay in Indre By

The historic center of Copenhagen offers the most variety of accommodation. Whether you’re looking for budget, mid-range, luxury hotels, or even private apartments, this neighborhood won’t disappoint. And because all the main attractions are close to one another, you’ll be within easy walking distance regardless of where you stay.

Capsule Hotel Nyhavn63

Capsule Hotel Nyhavn63 is the best budget hotel for travelers looking for affordable accommodation in Copenhagen. I prefer capsule hotels to regular hostels because capsules feel more private than bunk beds in dorms and the prices are generally comparable.

Solo capsules start at $25; For about $45, two adults can share a double bed. The hotel also offers options for single rooms and pods with private bathrooms, but don’t expect many other amenities.

The location is excellent – it’s on the pier in a row of historic buildings, so you can enjoy the views of the ships and canal as soon as you step out of the hotel. And you’re still within walking distance of all the main attractions in the heart of Copenhagen. Check prices and availability here.

25hours Hotel Indre By

The 25 Hours Hotel Indre By is located in the heart of the city, just minutes from Rosenborg Castle. It offers spacious rooms with colorful decoration, comfortable beds and immaculate private bathrooms.

For fitness and relaxation, guests can use the hotel’s fitness room and sauna. The hotel also has a terrace with sun loungers, which is very popular in the summer months.

All rooms in the hotel feature air conditioning, free WiFi and a desk. I particularly liked the furniture because it’s not just a boring beige color but really adds character to the room. The nightly rate for this hotel starts at $205, but that doesn’t include the delicious breakfast buffet. Check prices and availability.

NH Collection Copenhagen

NH Collection Copenhagen is a five-star hotel in the heart of the city. If you want clean, spacious rooms, easy access to Copenhagen’s best attractions, and excellent service, this is one of the best hotels in the city.

The hotel has several restaurants, a bar and a spectacular rooftop lounge area with one of the best views of the city. It’s a fantastic hotel with a prime location and all the amenities you need during your stay in Copenhagen. For a double room with breakfast it costs about $300 per night. Check prices and availability

Vesterbro: Best For Longer Stay

Where to stay in Copenhagen Vesterbro

Vesterbro is the district of Copenhagen southwest of the city center. It is one of the Danish capital’s most popular residential areas, both because of its easy access to the city center and because it is not as busy as the tourist areas.

The area is home to Copenhagen Central Station, making it ideal for those staying in the city for a while. If you’re spending a week or two in Copenhagen and want to take as many day trips as possible, proximity to the city’s central train station and harbor is crucial.

Vesterbro Neighbourhood in Copenhagen

Pros and Cons of Vesterbro

Pros

  • Easy access to the city center
  • Copenhagen Central Station is here
  • The residential area is mostly quiet

Cons

  • Fewer hotels
  • Not many tourist attractions

Highlights of Staying in Vesterbro

Vesterbro is primarily a residential area known for its event venues and conference centers. It doesn’t offer many tourist attractions, but offers easy access to the city center, where all the main attractions are located.

  • The Tube: The Tube is an interactive museum in Copenhagen Central Station. With optical illusions, bizarre light shows and the chance to dive into a ball pit, a visit to The Tube is one of the best ways to spend an hour in Copenhagen. It’s also a great place for unique and fun photography.
  • Enghaveparken: In the center of Vesterbro is Enghaveparken, a huge green area with a playground, fountains and sculptures. It is a great place for families with children in Copenhagen and also a good destination for anyone who wants to escape the busy areas of the city.

Best Places To Stay in Vesterbro

Vesterbro has many hotels, especially near Copenhagen Central Station. This is one of the things that makes the area travel-friendly despite the lack of tourist attractions. Hotels range from budget to luxury with single and family rooms, so there really is something for everyone.

CityHub Copenhagen

CityHub Copenhagen is a budget hotel at the northern end of Vesterbro. It’s a five-minute walk from Frederiksberg metro station and maybe 15 minutes from Copenhagen Central Station. Thanks to good public transport connections, the location is ideal for exploring Copenhagen’s most beautiful sights.

This hotel does not have standard rooms. It has hubs. It’s similar to a capsule hotel, but the hubs are slightly more spacious than capsules and there’s room for luggage inside. The only downside is that you have to share the bathroom, but even that isn’t a big problem as everything is cleaned often and is really spotless.

For a hub with a double room and breakfast for two people, it costs around $100 per night, which is a good deal. Without breakfast it costs $65 for two people, which is almost as cheap as a standard hostel. Check prices and availability.

Absalon Hotel

Where to stay in Copenhagen Absalon Hotel

The Absalon Hotel is a family-run hotel five minutes from Tivoli and the main train station. The rooms are a bit smaller, but clean and decorated with colorful accents, so full of character.

If you decide to stay at this hotel, choose the breakfast option. They serve a delicious breakfast buffet, a staple for Scandinavian countries. It costs about $162 per night for two adults with breakfast, a good deal for a four-star hotel in Copenhagen.

All rooms in the hotel come with a private bathroom, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV and a desk. Guests also have free (and fast) WiFi available. Check prices and availability here.

Nimb Hotel

Where to stay in Copenhagen Nimb Hotel

Nimb Hotel is the best luxury hotel near Tivoli Gardens. It is located on the border between Indre By and Vesterbro and offers easy walking access to all of the Danish capital’s main attractions. It offers spacious rooms with designer furniture, Bang & Olufsen TV and iPod/iPad/iPhone docking station.

All rooms have a private bathroom, but only the smaller double rooms have a shower. And each room has luxury toiletries and a bathrobe. The other rooms are more spacious and have a bathroom, while some rooms also have a fireplace.

The cheapest nightly rate (for two people) at Nimb Hotel is $660, excluding breakfast. The price is closer to $700, with breakfast included in the price. Guests have access to a hotel bar and a restaurant with first-class service. Check prices and availability here.

Nørrebro: Best For Foodies and Creatives

Best places to stay in Copenhagen Norrebro

Located northwest of Indre By, Nørrebro is an up-and-coming neighborhood with a diverse culture. It’s also the best part of the city to explore Copenhagen’s culinary scene and the place to be if you want to find Michelin star restaurants.

Norrebro is also a great place for art galleries and boutiques. If you want to find unique items like paintings by local artists or handmade ceramics, this is the best part of Copenhagen. There are not many historical sights, but the atmosphere is noticeably different from the city center.

Where to stay in Copenhagen Norrebro Superkilen Park

Pros and Cons of Nørrebro

Pros

  • Excellent food
  • Great shopping opportunities
  • Lots of parks

Cons

  • Few tourist attractions
  • Very few hotels

Highlights of Staying in Nørrebro

Nørrebro isn’t as full of tourist attractions as Indre By, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do in the area. Here are some reasons why you would specifically come to Nørrebro even if you booked a hotel in the heart of Copenhagen.

  • Assistens Cemetery: Visiting cemeteries isn’t for everyone, but for some people it’s the best part of a trip to a new city. The special thing about the Assistens Cemetery in Norrebro is that Hans Christian Andersen is buried here. The author’s tombstone is the landmark of the district and a must-see for most Copenhagen writers.
  • Superkilen Park: Norrebro is home to an urban park created as a place to unite the city’s most culturally diverse neighborhood. It’s a huge area that spans several blocks of flats and features skate ramps, a jogging track, a football pitch and much more.

Best Places to Stay in Nørrebro

The Nørrebro neighborhood doesn’t have too many hotels. Several hostels and budget hotels are here, mostly in the northern part of the district. And there’s one mid-range hotel near the docks, which overlooks Indre By and offers easy access to the town center.

Urban Camper Hostel & Bar

The Urban Camper Hostel & Bar is one of the cheapest places to stay in Copenhagen. It’s ideal for travelers on a budget who want a place to stay without relying on many amenities. This is not your standard hostel; there are tents with bunk beds instead of large dormitories.

The tents are all set up in one huge building, so everything stays inside and has heating and air conditioning. A tent can accommodate a maximum of four people and you can rent an entire tent for $80. A single bed typically only costs $20 per night. It’s a great deal for Copenhagen, but the bed is all you get. Find out about prices and availability here

Hotel Nora Copenhagen

The Hotel Nora Copenhagen is the only mid-range hotel in Nørrebro. It is a three-star hotel in a historic building on one of the city’s main cycle paths. A bridge separates it from Indre By and offers easy access to Copenhagen’s main attractions. It’s only a 15-minute walk to Rosenberg Castle, and even closer by bus.

The hotel rooms are small and have basic furnishings. But they have private bathrooms, TVs, and free breakfast. It costs just $144 per night for two adults with breakfast, which is a great deal for a hotel with such a great location.

Countless restaurants and bars are just minutes from the hotel, many across the street. There is also a bus stop directly on the street from Hotel Nora that connects the hotel with the city center. Find out about prices and availability here.

Frederiksberg: Best For Families

Best Places to stay in Copenhagen Frederiksberg

Frederiksberg is the district between Norrebro and Vesterbro. This large residential area is a quiet part of Copenhagen known for its large green spaces and Frederiksberg Castle. The entire district is connected to the city center and other parts of the city by subway.

The area is predominantly residential, with the exception of the area around the palace, which attracts the most tourists. Stay here and experience a peaceful Copenhagen, without the constant noise and crowds of the city center.

Where to stay in Copenhagen Sondermarken Frederiksberg

Pros and Cons of Staying in Frederiksberg

Pros

  • Great for families
  • Metro access to the city center
  • Quite and not busy

Cons

  • Not within walking distance of main landmarks
  • Few hotels
  • Very few tourist attractions

Highlights of Staying in Frederiksberg

In terms of attractions and activities, Frederiksberg is probably the second best place to stay in Copenhagen after Indre By. And with excellent shopping and numerous specialty shops, Frederiksberg is one of the most popular areas for locals.

  • Frederiksberg Castle and Gardens: The 18th-century castle and its extensive gardens are by far the most famous historical monuments in this district. Frederiksberg Palace was built in the Italian Baroque style and offers tours of the royal apartments. The Frederiksberg Gardens feature landscaped paths, canals and lakes within the castle grounds.
  • Cistern in Søndermarken: Cisternerne is an underground art space in a former reservoir. The space hosts exhibitions and thematic events and is truly one of the most extraordinary interactive museums in Copenhagen. I think it’s a must for art lovers and creatives out there

Best Places to Stay in Frederiksberg

Since Frederiksberg is predominantly a residential area, there are not many hotels there. But the hotels nearby are good mid-range hotels with everything you need during a stay in Copenhagen. I should also mention that there are some cheap hotels near the pier with bad reviews that you should avoid.

Hotel Sct. Thomas

Hotel Sct. Thomas is a three star hotel in a beautiful historic building. It lies on the border between Frederiksberg and Vesterbro and is just a 15-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Station. Bus and subway stops are also close to the hotel.

The rooms are small but equipped with everything you need, including a private bathroom, a flat-screen TV and a desk. Smaller rooms start at $120 per night for two adults, which is a bargain.

Larger rooms and single rooms are also available at this hotel. Overall, the Hotel Sct. Thomas offers good value for money and a prime location in Copenhagen. Check prices and availability.

Scandic Falkoner

The Scandic Falkoner is a four-star hotel just a stone’s throw from Frederiksberg Train Station. With three subway lines running through the station, the hotel offers good connections to downtown Copenhagen.

The rooms are elegant and modern, with comfortable beds and large windows that let in lots of light. Each room has a clean private bathroom with a shower, free WiFi, an electric kettle and a desk.

Nightly rates start at $211 for two adults. Breakfast is included in the price and guests can choose between a continental breakfast and a breakfast buffet. Check prices and availability here.

Østerbro: Best For Outdoor Activities

Where to stay in Copenhagen Osterbro Little Mermaid Statue

Østerbro, the Copenhagen district north of Indre By, is known for its extensive parks, boat tours and the Parken Stadium. This is where Fælledparken is located, Copenhagen’s largest park, which is very popular for outdoor sports.

This part of Copenhagen also has a developing food scene. It is home to Geranium, a Michelin-starred restaurant named the best in the world in 2022. Stay in Østerbro if you want to be in a quieter part of Copenhagen, get around by boat and have easy access to fun sports.

Best Places to stay in Copenhagen Osterbro Kastellet

Pros and Cons of Staying in Østerbro

Pros

  • Excellent restaurant scene
  • Plenty of fun things to do
  • Get around by boat

Cons

  • Lacking tourist attractions
  • Metro stations are few and far apart

Highlights of Staying in Østerbro

Østerbro is not full of tourist attractions like Indre By. But Østerbro’s monuments are just as iconic as those in the city center and, unfortunately, just as crowded.

  • Langelinie: The Little Mermaid sculpture is the reason why so many tourists in Copenhagen come to Østerbro. It is located in Langelinie, a seaside promenade with beautiful sea views, cafes and beautiful green spaces. The statue is one of Copenhagen’s busiest landmarks and is usually difficult to spot with a sea of tourists blocking the view.
  • Dinner at Geranium: In 2022, Geranium was named the best restaurant in the world. With three Michelin stars, the Danish restaurant offers one of the most exclusive and sophisticated culinary experiences.
  • Kastellet: The military fortress on the border between Østerbro and Indre By is one of Copenhagen’s most famous monuments. Kastellet dates back to the 17th century and is one of the best-preserved citadels in Northern Europe.

Best Places to Stay in Østerbro

Østerbro offers a good selection of hotels, but the best are near the water and the metro. It is important to note that there are no really cheap hotels in this area. You won’t find a cheap stay in Østerbro, but you will find plenty of great hotels with premium amenities and breathtaking panoramic views.

Comwell Copenhagen Portside Dolce by Wyndham

Comwell Copenhagen is an excellent four-star hotel, just a short walk from one of the city’s many harbors. It has double, family rooms and suites, making it a good option for any travel group.

All rooms at the hotel come with a private bathroom, a desk and a flat-screen TV. And most importantly: the rooms and bathrooms are all spotless. The hotel also has a fitness center with modern equipment and a sun terrace, which is extremely popular on Copenhagen’s rare sunny days.

Room rates start at $125 per night (for two people), a bargain for such a fantastic hotel. Sure, the location is a little outside the city center, but you’re only 5-10 minutes from the center of the action by boat or subway. Check prices and availability here.

Adina Apartment Hotel Copenhagen

The Adina Apartment Hotel is ideal for travelers who prefer to stay in apartments. Each guest has their own private area with bathroom, kitchenette and access to a communal pool, gym, lounge and restaurants.

This hotel offers everything from studios, ideal for couples, to two-bedroom apartments that sleep up to five people. Only the studios have a kitchenette, while all larger apartments have a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher.

The bathrooms of the larger apartments are also equipped with a washing machine and dryer, making them perfect for longer stays in Copenhagen. Prices and availability can be found here.

The Audo Copenhagen

Audo Copenhagen is an exclusive hotel with elegant and modern rooms. All rooms have large, extra-long double beds, making this one of the best places to stay in Copenhagen for very tall travelers. Seriously, if your feet are constantly dangling off the hotel bed, you should book a room at the Audo.

The rooms are spotlessly clean and the same goes for the private bathrooms. The starting price per night for this fabulous hotel is around $400, including a fantastic breakfast. Plus, the hotel is just two minutes from the nearest subway station, making it easy to get to the rest of the city. Find out about prices and availability here.

Amagerbro: Best For Beaches and Sea Views

Amagerbro is the area south of central Copenhagen. It’s known for beaches, water sports and boats and is generally one of the best parts of the city for those who enjoy being near the water. If you are planning a summer trip to the Danish capital, you should consider this area.

This neighborhood is also the closest to Copenhagen Airport. Let’s say you’re in the city for a short time and would prefer to stay just 3-4 subway stops from the airport. In this case, Amagerbro is a good option, especially because the hotels have lower prices than those in the city center, even if the quality of service and facilities are very similar.

Where to stay in Copenhagen Amager Beach Park

Pros and Cons of Staying in Amagerbro

Pros

  • Short travel time to the airport
  • Best Copenhagen beaches
  • Water sports access

Cons

  • Far from city center
  • Few hotels and restaurants

Highlights of Staying in Amagerbro

Amagerbro is the working class district of Copenhagen with the best beaches in the city. You won’t find many historical attractions in this area, but there are plenty of things to do to have fun on the water.

  • Amager Beach Park: Copenhagen’s best beach park features a 4-kilometer-long sandy beach. It is an artificial beach known for pleasant walks, beautiful sea views and water fun.
  • Copenhagen Cablepark: Located in the northern part of Amagerbro, Copenhagen Cablepark is the best destination for water sports enthusiasts, especially wakeboarders. It is suitable for both experienced wakeboarders and beginners.

Best Places To Stay in Amagerbro

There aren’t too many hotels in Amagerbro and the area is lacking in the luxury hotel department. But if you’re looking for budget and mid-range stays close to both the airport and the city center, you’ll find a couple of suitable options.

Go Hotel City

The Go Hotel City is one of the cheapest hotels in Copenhagen. The rooms are very small but have everything you need and are spotlessly clean. Each hotel guest has access to a private bathroom, fast Wi-Fi and an in-room television.

Smaller rooms start at $80 per night, which is a great deal for two travelers. Go Hotel City also offers special conditions for those traveling alone. It is close to the metro station, which takes you to the airport in 20 minutes and to the city center in just 15 minutes. Check prices and availability.

CPH Studio Hotel

The CPH Studio Hotel is an affordable three-star hotel just five minutes from two subway stations. All rooms feature elegant Danish furniture and are equipped with a private bathroom and kitchenette.

The hotel also has its own bar and restaurant and is just a 10-minute walk from the beach. Room rates start at $116 for two adults, not including breakfast. It’s a good deal considering that each room comes with a stovetop and that the hotel is only 15 minutes from the airport and the city center. Discover prices and availability here.
